NLEX to name as Cory Aquino Expressway, other tolls to follow suit

BALINTAWAK, Quezon City, Quezon Province, Philippines – THE NAME North Luzon Expressway will now be history.

North Luzon Expressway, or NLEX for short, will be renamed after a president. What’s next for other expressways?

After generations of motorists, young and old alike, had been used to call the names of expressways by geography, Congress has stepped in to amend the names in favor of the Aquino family. In fact, Nueva Ecija 9th District Rep. Magnolia Brosa Antotino had exerted all her efforts to pass the bill naming the North Luzon Expressway to Corazon Aquino Expressway. As a consequence, this was passed in the House committee on public works and highways under the House of Representatives.

The article in GMA News further stated that:

The measure, filed in August 2014, seeks to rename the highway after the late mother of President Benigno Aquino III. In the bill’s explanatory note, [she] said renaming the NLEX after the late President will “bestow distinct honor [on her]” and “perpetuate [her] memory.”
“If favorably passed into law, it will constantly remind us of the noble deeds of the late President, especially for the poor, and inspire our people to emulate her example of selfless service to the nation while her exceptional courage and leadership gave hope and united the Filipino people at a critical time in the country’s history,” she said.

Realizing that her mother’s name was chosen for this noble deed by Congress, Kris Aquino had earlier lobbied to the congressmen to push also in naming the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) after her, and in renaming the Metro Manila Skyway after her son, Bimby Aquino. The congresswoman equally responded by drafting another bill, which shall be passed by the end of May this year.

Antotino has also expressed her plans to write another bill prohibiting any company to post its advertisements in the billboards along Cory Aquino Expressway and the SLEX except in companies endorsed by Kris and Bimby.

Other tolls to be renamed

When asked by thousands of netizens why only Antotino had only wrote that bill, and that the congresswoman was unfair to others, she replied, “Netizens must not worry about only North Luzon Expressway being chosen to be named after the first Philippine woman president. In fact, there are many letters coming from my office asking me the same question. And there are many drafts that I have written to name other tollways. By tomorrow I will present all of these to Congress for debate.”

Here are the bills that she drafted:

This is South Luzon Ex
This is South Luzon Expressway. Years later, this shall be renamed after Kris Aquino.
