TXT (투모로우바이투게더) – CROWN: MV Review

This year, we are witnessing the rise of new groups like ITZY and Cherry Bullet. Now, Big Hit Entertainment followed suit by debuting TXT, which stands for the phrase “Tomorrow x Together”. The members are YeonjunSoobinBeomgyuTaehyun, and Huening Kai.

I am also excited on this, as this is my first time to review a music of a boy group, and second time for newbies.

Pardon also if I haven’t done any with BTS. This time, we will do it on the newbie group. You may watch first their music video before reading my evaluation on them:

  1. Video must have a storyline – 5 points

The group somehow has a storyline in the video. At first, a boy with horns in his head had been bad, but something’s changed. One had wings, and through this they aim to reach for a star, while realizing that they are just a tiny speck in the world, and they are living in a cramped space.

  1. Theme must be consistent and clear – 5 points

Their theme featuring cramped spaces was consistent throughout the video. They also featured their rooms and their alleys, implying that they are being compressed in the MV. And not to mention their special effects though. These have been used throughout the video.

  1. The music video as a whole must be colorful – 5 points

I like how the colors are used playfully in the MV, particularly on 0:39 – 0:41. Same goes with their special effects throughout the whole of the music.

  1. Must be done in good taste – 5 points

I see the video as done in good taste. In fact, I really wanted to view it from beginning to the end.

  1. Does not celebrate Halloween, Easter, or similar celebrations – 5 points

This merits perfect score, as no celebrations of any sort are featured here.

  1. Does not feature astrology – 5 points

No trace of these is seen in the video.

  1. Less horror is featured in the video – 5 points

I did not see something scary in any part of the video.

  1. Not too revealing outfits – 5 points

Their outfits are not too revealing, yet they show how stylish they were.

  1. Ability of the music to excite the listener – 5 points

At the first seconds of the music, they featured a ringtone which describes clearly their name. Aside from that, they posed a different tune which sets them apart from other boy groups we dealt with. This makes one excited and crave for more in this music.

  1. Music should not be deafening on the ears. – 4 points

The chorus part is just deafening when played too loud.

  1. Dance can be learned easily even by beginners – 4 points

The dance can be easily learned, except at 1:25. I don’t know how to apply this when I dance the song.

  1. Dance must not be too sensual – 5 points

Nothing sensual was seen in the video.

  1. Moral lesson must be clearly stated – 5 points

So far, the moral lesson they impliedly portray is more on reaching the dream, and that is obtaining the crown which represents triumph.

  1. They must impart something beneficial for their viewers – 5 points

A little bit detail of the video will tell viewers to do something, as we’ll see the timestamp later. With some fans who are busy with K-Pop, they unconsciously tell us that we have to wash and hang our clothes.

Other Matters

  1. Inject sense of humor in the music video – 6 points

This refers to the boys doing “Hide and Seek” on clothes, and on how the boy reacted at 2:38 – 2:40. Same goes with 3:43 – 3:44, where they play another game called tug of war. The boy standing in between and holding the clothesline kept himself cool.

  1. Ability of the song to make it to mainstream media  – 5 points

I suppose that this may be picked up by mainstream media in the near future, as young ones clamor for new songs, and new voices from new boy groups. In short, they want something new, and I might not be surprised if mainstream media will play it.

  1. Review by other sites – 5 points

Comments by netizens follow:

I just can’t stop watching the music video! BigHit did a great job forming this group, just like BTS!

Whether you liked it or not, you can’t deny the fact that this was a great start, especially for a debut song

So strange to hear bighit intro thingy and not see BTS omfg

Obsessed and Assessed reviewed the song “Crown” in a different way. Like in the past, the blogger has been hesitant over new groups and their debut songs.

The blogger viewed it as lively, and this serves as main distinction that separates them from a senior group (BTS). According to him/her, this will be their great advantage as they might reach wider audience.

On the music, it noticed that the music was clean, crisp, and fresh. (Looks like I’m hungry btw.) But this fails to make the newbies stand out in relation with other boy groups, and instead may be an extension of “track for ASTRO or NCT Dream…”

Regarding the video, the group has its fun side especially on choreography and mix of colors.

The blogger has its side note that “BigHit sure does love their three-letter abbreviations.” (Well, if I may add, Big Hit can make another boy group in the future. We will name it CLL, or COL, which means we have to call. If now we have TXT, then we have CLL/COL to communicate. 😀 )

Though it was in itself exciting enough, the blogger sees it as not meeting expectation, considering the hype over the group. However, it sees “serious potential” in the group, especially in the future.

AllKPop reviewed the song as bold, light, and more “masculine.” It told that the group fits in as a cute boyband group, and noted that initially, they did not show their diversity when it comes to singing.

The negative side revolves on cramped spaces when they dance, and on dance where the choreography was not so challenging.

TheBiasList viewed the MV and the song as “brightening”, and is pleased to learn of new offer by Big Hit. To say the least, it was youthful, energetic, and fresh. It expects more success from the group as it caters more to other target market. The lead song “Crown”, is also explicit, and can be easily understood. The blogger ends with a note that the debut music of TXT was their strong debut indeed.

  1. Review of the music video as a whole – 5 points

So far, this offers a fresh perspective of how we view boy groups. While other groups normally sing and dance, and do something, TXT had its advantage of featuring special effects to render it more exciting.

I also noted how Big Hit Entertainment played its logo at the start of the video. Normally, everytime Big Hit’s logo is played, we think of BTS. However, by including it, somehow this will change our perception in their future projects.

  1. Other factors
  • Special effects are used – 5 points

They made a good choice on featuring special effects as their advantage. At the start of the video, it can be seen, defining the energy the boys have. It also adds depth to the message they want to convey to us, as also seen on a member having so may tails, and another with wings.

  • Illusions are featured – 5 points

This refers to 2:05 – 2:08 of the video, where Hueningkai leans on the brick wall without falling. Also noted is on 2:15 – 2:20 where Yeonjun at first looks like sitting on a room, but later on, actually stands on a wall.

  • Gives fresh perspective – 5 points

So far, Big Hit Entertainment made a great deal to set TXT and BTS apart. What BTS did was to feature their style in their debut song “No More Dream,” and that is their strong persona. This was different in TXT, where they show themselves as calm and cool persons. Remember that first impression lasts.

  • Date is set – 0 points.

Let me tell you why I gave zero points to this.

Almost all videos released have a date set on the video. This will let fans tell if this is released for this year or last year. This is the only thing they missed, but also important.

Final Words

Remember that Big Hit in the past created 6ACES, where rumors tell that it will replace BTS. But considering what happened now, it was not fulfilled. They then created TXT, and it does not replace the longstanding group. As to 6ACES, we may have wondered on what happened to them now, as no news of them was heard as of this writing.

Anyway, given that the newbie group set their music right, we might wonder on what will they show to us further.

This music is a good start for them, and it caters well for those who want to find diversity in this genre. Some points that should be considered are minimal, and hope this will inspire them in their journey.
