For the Spring Season, here comes N.Flying with their new song Spring Memories.
(Side Note: To simplify further future MV Reviews, Criterion No. 3 – No. 10, which relates to appearance and music, will all be given five points. On videos uploaded to 1theK, two criteria will be given five and zero points respectively. I will indicate on the Final Words if scores tell otherwise.)
Since Spring necessitates romantic settings in Korea, this calls for a music video review. Would they feature love in a different way? You may watch this before reading the author’s review:
- Video must have a storyline – 5 points
The storyline they presented is fairly simple. The girl gets notified of spring, but consistently ignores it until finally, she goes outside. Meanwhile, the guy takes pictures of spring, which reminds him of moments with the girl. There come a time when they almost met, only to be distracted with their phones. The video ends with the man who suddenly sees a girl in a house, implying another sequel for the video.
1theK, in its YouTube page, provided a storyline for this video:
The band N.Flying, loved for ‘Rooftop’, a vivid picture of a love affair on a winter night, will sing the love on a spring this time.
The title track ‘Spring Memories’, which marks the beginning of the song with lyrical acoustic guitars and whistles, expressed various aspects of love for this warm spring through a self-written song of the leader SEUNGHYUB. It tells the story of lovers who are half of each other and who had a brilliant sweet spring day but sometimes faced with a bitter moment of longing for their old spring memories.
- Theme must be consistent and clear – 5 points
The spring theme is consistent throughout the whole MV, particularly on cherry trees.
- Moral lesson must be clearly stated – 5 points.
Primarily, the lesson that can be seen is on reminiscing moments, how to move on, and how to deal with it in our future lives.
- They must impart something beneficial for their viewers – 5 points
At 2:18 and 2:22, they featured brewing coffee and baking bread, respectively. Viewers might get interested on how to do it, considering that this is also a type of business that sells.
- Ability of the song to make one cry – 5 points
One that moved me is on 2:28 – 2:42, where one thought that he and the girl will be together, but another guy joined with them. In the video, the latter guy is her boyfriend.
- Ability of the song to make it to mainstream media – 3 points
- Review by other sites – 5 points
KPopReviewed told that the song was happy, in time for spring. It noted that with their song “Rooftop” gaining charts, the pressure builds up on Spring Memories. It complimented the group for making the right choice of song, since it’s Spring in Korea where lovesongs are a hit. These songs are not a type, but this time he/she favors it.
Though TheBiasList finds this music as “solid”, he wants the previous tracks. The blogger noted the group’s improvement. However, it described the song as catered to coffee shops. That was nice, but he wondered if this will help a lot for the group to maintain momentum in the future.
- Review of the music video as a whole – 5 points.
I find the video very interesting, especially at the end of the video. Why? Luckily, the guy approaches the girl by surprise. What will happen next? The end of the video served as cliffhanger.
In the whole of the video, they substantially featured the cherry trees, implying that their love was so deep.
One thing I noted is at 1:46, where they briefly featured a church. Somehow, they didn’t absolutely hide a church there, considering that Christians make up one-third of Korea’s population. Aside from the fact that they supported innovations that shaped the Korea we know today.
