(G)I-DLE ((여자)아이들)– Uh-Oh: MV Review

We are now up again in reviewing (G)I-DLE, with their newest song Uh-Oh.

Before we review the MV, I have a joke:

(G)I-DLE members while singing Senorita:

[Pre-chorus] Shuhua:

Uh-Oh. Uh-Oh. Uh-Oh.
Uh-Oh. Uh-Oh. Uh-Oh.
Uh-Oh. Uh-Oh. Uh-Oh.

[Chorus] Miyeon:

They go. I’ll show, you’re naked. Oh!
I love this second talk.
I’ll go ship her but you…

Having another release this year is good news. Recall that the author gave a failing grade in their past track (Senorita). Now that they are up in their new comeback, have they considered some improvements laid here? Let’s see in this review:

The group haven’t provided clear storyline, though it’s clear that they are in the West. Even 1theK did not provide clear storyline behind it, which for me seems strange. Anyway, the American feel is consistent throughout the whole video. Viewers will get a glimpse of America’s past, as (G)I-DLE brings them to pioneer cars and motorcycles, and will learn how the people lived in the 90s.

Review from other sites

TheBiasList noted that the lack of admiration for Senorita necessitates follow-up song, which somehow is on a right track.

It viewed the instrumentals as “appealing” and “fierce”, particularly on the mix of beats from different genres. Though this steers the song to a standstill, that is tolerable. While at the start, the melody appears boring, the chorus have been added flare, moreso with the “free-form” second verse. While not at par with debut tracks, it’s much better than Senorita.

KPopReviewed also noticed the essence of 90s music present, like “disc scratching”, “urban beat”, and TV/VHS effect. It liked how they channel this kind of genre to show to present generation.

Particular interest was Soyeon, who quite surprised the blogger with her vocals and raps.

As a whole, the track was quite catchy, bold, and contains attitude that defines (G)I-DLE. This is another track that must be added to the portfolio of the group.

Review as a whole

Although I disliked how Soyeon changed her looks, she nevertheless energized me when she was the first to sing (0:13 – 0:23). Also, Soojin still stood out with her daring moves, especially at 1:48 – 1:58. It is given that these moves might clash with conservatism of some Koreans, but they still have to continue. Anyway, nothing lewd or gross is featured here.

Netizens noticed that Shuhua got more lines in Uh-Oh (0:45 – 0:55). That alone is a great improvement. It can be recalled that she herself requested less lines in previous song. This is because some Koreans laughed at how she speaks their language. So, those who laughed at her must have felt ashamed, since she got it flawlessly this time.

I was not disappointed with (G)I-DLE’s newest song. Their upbeat and their vocals were very energetic and refreshing, and this is what I also wanted personally. However, while they improved on some aspects like that of music, some improvements must be done further. This is more on providing clearer storyline, injecting moral lesson, and adding funny scenes in the video. Also, they have to add the 1theK logo, even as a small icon.
