Love Advice No. 106 (Gerald and Julia vs. Bea)

Background

My Advice

Sina Kathryn Bernardo, Sarah G., at Liza Soberano. Bakit?

Taeyong (태용) – Long Flight: MV Review

With our review of NCT done, we will now focus on its member Taeyong, with his solo debut.

The MV’s storyline tells of a man sitting on studio with an airplane, imagining that he is on a flight. He describes in the MV what he did while on a “flight.”

Viewers are imparted with message that dreams are limitless, and that we should still fly high. This is the case when he sits in an imaginary airplane, thinking that he flies at the clouds. We can learn how people might interact inside the plane, as illustrated in a plane buffet.

The soloist featured aurora, an astronomical event, at 1:59. The MV also shares settings with GOT7 in their song Eclipse (2:07), where they both are in a large, circular window.

Taeyong’s solo debut intends to promote himself. Some aspects were good, and some needs improvement. First, music was nearly-exciting. Second is on dance aspect, since it needs to be feature more. Dances will add more flair to performance. Finally, humorous aspect. Only funny thing was that Taeyong was hopping around to peek outside. Imagine a plane with high windows, and passengers would not see clearly the skyline.

Review by others

TheBiasList expected already that Taeyong’s Long Flight will fall on the same tempo as what EXO members had undergone. Anyway, the talent in Taeyong has been always discovered, which makes him one of the most resilient in the group, offering chances to hone his skills further.

However, downside of it would be on gaining less attention, not to mention lack of something nice to make the song stand out, thereby going to nowhere.

KPopReviewed noted that only positive aspects of Taeyong’s release was his ability to switch from singing to rapping with ease. Another was the nice airplane setting, illustrating how SM Entertainment gave enough budget to execute this masterpiece.

On not-so-good side, it does not showcase Taeyong’s full potential, as the lyrics and beats lack energy.

Ailee (에일리) – Room Shaker: MV Review

For the first time, we will feature another soloist named Ailee, with her song Room Shaker.

I only knew of her name in OST of Goblin (a K-Drama series), where she sang I Will Go To You Like The First Snow. (This OST and others have a special place in my heart, being played in the bus as I remember how hard it is for me to pass the board exam.)

At first glance, this comes quite close to TWICE’s Heart Shaker. Might think of her lyrics as “My room shaker, shaker, okay.” But as we review it, we will see if Room Shaker will shake our hearts and minds. Let’s start!

Storyline

The storyline tells of Ailee shaking the room with her performance, as indicated by an earthquake. The students in the classroom are looking above, terrified by the earthquake she created.

MV features baseball bat (sports) and students in classroom (which tell us how students interact in the class). Also, she features seismic waves (at 1:36), which will tell viewers to be ready in case earthquake comes. Meanwhile, I find it funny how the girl in the room reacts at 1:39.

Review by others

TheBiasList described Ailee as borrowing tracks from BLACKPINK. On music, it was painted as “relatively strong” and optimal. The sequence of the last minute was outstanding with its powerful instrumentals.

The blogger felt that the music used outdated styles, and that it lacked the ability to use Ailee’s skills to the fullest.

Ailee opted to venture with new sound that will impress upon listeners’ minds, which KPopReviewed noticed in her. Good points include the energetic, brassy instrumentals. While hip-hop, it managed to show its potentials. It can be best described as a new experiment on her previous acts.

Review as whole

As a whole, the MV was simple. Ailee clearly defined the title through her storyline: Just like earthquake, her performance will shake everyone. Aside from that, she used different themes (dark room/open car/school) so as not to make the song boring.

What I liked the best was that the trumpeting instrumental does not interfere with her vocals. In a way, that served as filler, and time for Ailee to pause before giving a hollow voice. On worst part, that’s the background voice on final chorus. No need for this, as her vocals are enough to lead the song to finish line.

For comparisons, it would be best to compare Room Shaker to her OST, as I already knew of the latter song. From that point, recent performance tells versatility she will display in next comebacks.

Special effects are featured, first showing computer screen, and second is on the way she uses her hands. Finally, MV has references to Hachiniche and Ofunato earthquakes (1:36). Supposedly this represents Japan triggered by daily quakes, an analogy Ailee wants to show us.
