SATURDAY (세러데이) – Bbyong (뿅): MV Review

Since VIXX did not release their MV on comeback date, we will not review them.

Stay tuned for upcoming reviews of KARD, TWICE, AKMU, and ONEUS.

This is the third time we review SATURDAY, with their song Bbyong. It’s exactly seven months since we reviewed their bop song WiFi, and it’s still exciting to critique it today.

So far, their agency is one of the most responsive this 2019. They promoted the group well through Makestar, and provided replacements for members who already left. We’ll explain these further as we rate agencies and groups at year-end.

Honestly, I regularly check for updates on the group like viewing photo throwback, concept photos, and MV teasers. As I heard the title, what comes to my mind was “Just feel it Bbyong Bbyong!” Kidding aside, how will a full-pledged Sunday review their performance? Let’s see here:

(Side Note: Chohee was my ultimate bias then, and Ayeon as bias wrecker. With Chohee gone, I promoted the latter to be ultimate bias, and Yuki to be my bias wrecker.)

The only storyline that was clear was that they are travelling to the future with their car. As they proceeded to the future, they are peeking what happened to them in the past.

I find Ayeon funny at 0:30 – 0:32, where she does her signature surprise pose. Afterwards at 0:36 – 0:39, she made a deal with the seller, this time being Yuki. Viewers would consider stargazing with 1:57 featuring shortly the planets, and 1:58 the old equipments like radios and camcorder.

Review by others (updated)

TheBiasList deems the group as in a search of “novelty hit”, trying to hit with a fad. While asides and “bratty sing-talk” give life to it, the song suffers from the “easy route” taken by many tracks instead of utilizing fully the pop track inside. Worse, the rap part at the interlude inhibits the group’s potentials to find their own voices.

KPopReviewed noted that the song started with colorful, vibrant, and brassy tunes that hooked him in first few seconds. Vocals were nice, and chorus is more enjoyable. Looks like they are influenced by Momoland and ITZY when it comes to concepts.

However, the overall aspect was not memorable, and the rest of performance was “dull and boring” for the song.

Review as whole

Essentially, Bbyong is a mixture of the past and the present, with the future as their theme. The settings, equipment, and cars used hark back to the 80s. Meanwhile, the video uses the funky tune at the start of music. Haneul’s raps are given heavy beat drop, and jazz tune can be mostly heard on chorus and verses.

Most outstanding member for me was on Haneul, on her voice and raps. Most attractive would be Ayeon. Meanwhile, Juyeon and Minseo were given more lines, and that is worth commending.

Another scene worth noticing is on Yuki picking soap (?) containing random words, then pressed in the blender. This means that they jumbled up with words available to describe their time travel.

Missing two members

I felt shocked and dismayed on Chohee and Sion, since they just left without any explanation. Had they decided to remain, Chohee’s solo dance would have added a bang to the song.

While the agency’s future is very promising, the group’s future is very bleak. We are down with original three members, and we are unsure if they will continue in the long run. This is something members must work it out if they want to succeed in this line.

Points for improvement

With change of concept comes change of group’s styles from cute to near-badass. It’s okay, as they are attracting wider audience. And it’s quite tempting to do it, as more fans want mature and badass concepts. But to attain the goal, some improvements must be kept in mind.

First is on uploading the music to 1theK, like what it did to WiFi. Why? As underrated group, it would be difficult to promote it and gain attention if that’s not the case. It can’t be denied also that WiFi was a hit due to this (2.3M views), which is explained in separate article.

Second is on engaging in various promotions, from Queendom to Mask Singer. They can also promote overseas, where they can make a great deal on bop songs. It’s up to them, but this will help in achieving the popularity they need.

Finally, provide clear storyline or tell in its MV what Bbyong is all about. As of now, they haven’t provided description in YouTube page, making it difficult for me to understand the MV.

TEEN TEEN – It’s On You (책임져요): MV Review

We will review another rookie group, this time with TEEN TEEN in their song It’s On You.

As what I commented earlier, I haven’t found something worth remembering from this. Let’s discuss first what’s in it before I give a joke on that:

The storyline starts with the boys maneuvering the airplane. On the other side, some boys pulled a string. These all they made to reach their destination, that is, on other planet.

Funny scene is on 1:08 – 1:09, where a boy shoots a ball, to be dropped to other boy. Look at the latter’s reactions. For the first time, a boy group features this. The scene is quite similar to Honey Popcorn, where a member shoots balls to the other side.

Review as whole

Journey and airplane themes were used throughout the video, and their dances are very simple. They are also teaching the value of journey, and sparks interest for us to travel via airplanes.

Teen Teen features airplane and hot-air balloon (2:03 – 2:04), which tells of them flying high. In addition, they made use of special effects on flying shapes and pink clouds. These things are pronounced on 2:51 – 2:52 and 2:59.

As to the music, the twinkling tune can be heard at start of music, then proceeds to stagey tune. The end displays blobbing tune. These things lacked enough energy for me to be excited, albeit being excited on the colorful visuals.

Joketime

The name’s quite unimaginative. At first glance, this reminds me of a song from TWICE:

I’m like TEEN TEEN
Just like TEEN TEEN
Tell me that you’ll be my baby

Or that of another song from SEVENTEEN:

SEVENTEEN TEEN TEEN
Know one now, PSY, yeah!
Come on, come on, come on!
Noona bae is so dope…

Another commenter told that this reminds him of Teen Titans Go.

TheBiasList made a good assessment of Produce 101 groups, like that of Teen Teen. The group starts itself with “bright niche”, and it’s okay. He favors the synthetic intro, which should lead the way all to the end. Outstanding part was the chorus which keeps the song together.

Their sing-song performance did not do well with the half-baked, lackluster melodies. Regardless, he is okay with these kind of concepts.
