HINAPIA – Drip: MV Review

With incoming work I applied for next year, and with few reads, I might limit MV Reviews from that point.

Also, since seasonal misheard lyrics are not yet featured highly by YouTube, I’ll shift gears next year.

For a bit of info, Hinapia is composed of former Pristin members, namely Minkyung (Roa), Gyeongwon (Yuha), Yebin (Rena), and Eunwoo. A fifth new member, Bada, is also included in the group.

Even if Pristin attained relative success, it gone hiatus and later disbanded, leaving members in disarray. Four members then signed contract with OSR (then called as AlSeulBit) and redebuted as Hinapia. We’ll discuss this further as we rate Pledis and OSR at year-end.

At this point, I am going to stan them as a group, and pick them all as my biases. This is a way of making up for missed times following the four as Pristin. Let’s start!

Storyline

The storyline tells about the four being under Pledis, and how they were trapped during their long hiatus. This is best explained by Bada in a bubble, and Eunwoo in jail, holding a boat while soaking in bathtub. Later the group finds ways for other members to escape, like cutting a wire and serving as rope, destroying the iron jail, and lending a hand to Bada.

Viewers will find beneficial, being taught to put out fires using extinguishers.

Review as whole

Drip uses popping tunes at start of video. It becomes progressively leaning to rock before pausing a bit. This is repeated on the second verse. Totally, this music reminds us of Dreamcatcher’s Piri, albeit with lesser whistles. This should’ve pulled them off higher had they chose more daring tunes.

I find the ending a bit scary, as they featured a skull. While this represents death, I’m still puzzled on its relation to MV as whole.

Hinapia undergone so many changes, from choice of concepts to name changes. In fact, the first three used their real names as stage names. On concepts, Drip continued what Pristin’s Get It left off.

As a whole, the girls maybe considered the whims of many viewers, particularly on leaning with mature tracks. And to be honest, this kind of maturity is one of the most daring, and I liked it very much. Finally, I find Eunwoo and Bada beautiful in this MV.

Review by others

TheBiasList liked the song itself, being polarizing between cute and wild concepts. Though not convincing as well, Drip goes direct to the point and moderates what would be a very wild aesthetic. Points for improvement are on short hooks, chorus being not impressive, and weak verses.

KPopReviewed noted that female groups this year have no time for cute concepts. That’s the case of Hinapia, which continues mature concepts that trended so far. He found the hooks as very “addictive” and smooth, plus beats complementing the music. For improvements, that would be on the song not showcasing much what’s in a group.

Joketime

A public joke tells us what Hinapia means:

(H)appy
(I)’m
(N)ot
(A)
(P)ledis
(I)dol
(A)nymore

The name might’ve been chosen as sign of disgust how Pledis neglected the former group.

Others revealed the word (or sound-like of it) in other languages:

Filipino: Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), a fish commonly eaten in PH
Indonesian: Hina (disgrace) and Pia (cookies). Hence, “disgrace cookies”.
Malay: Hina (expression used as insult) and Pia (beer). Insulting a beer?
Japanese: Hina (doll) and Pia (peer). Hence, “a group of dolls,” like Hinamatsuri (Festival).
Portuguese: Ri na pia (Laugh in the sink.)

One reads the group’s name as Humana Insurance.
