K-Pop Write-Ups: Emphasis on Celebrities’ Attitudes

While the author may be enchanted by visuals and talents, it looks more on attitude. And you may have noticed that it is of prime importance, especially in rating groups and members. This is because attitudes from the stars can contribute to their success or failure. (Take note, even J.Y. Park himself recognizes this fact.)

We’ll repeat this again and again. This will be our guide as we discuss and review K-Pop this 2020.

Proper behavior

As K-Pop fans, we are used to them being prim and proper, avoid scandals, and so on to maintain it. However, this must be of less concern nowadays. At a minimum, (1) groups and members must correctly respond to issues, (2) be present on various engagements, especially overseas, (3) speak up immediately if untoward incidents happen; and (4) have regard for fellow members.

TWICE members complied with first point on Mina’s hiatus. Second point is being done by them also, plus BTS and BLACKPINK. CLC’s Sorn did this third point by apologizing on social media. On the last point, Red Velvet gave updates on Wendy’s condition.

Blast from the past

Let me give you an idea why I do have to reinforce this starting this year.

Thirteen years ago, K-Pop was not so popular. The author only followed an underrated non-Korean co-ed group, and picked a leader and lead vocalist as ultimate bias. Issues with a member surfaced, which the agency and the group haven’t resolved.

It led to that member being on hiatus. During her absence, fans engaged in wars, and more speculations emerged. It later came to a point where the group disbanded. Still, the agency and the group did not issue apologies or clarifications on this issue.

Apparently, incorrect responses over her attitude led to the group’s demise. And up to this writing, few people knew that this group existed.

Final Words

As this unfortunate incident is also happening on K-Pop, we have to be very strict on it.

Attitudes will be another important aspect we have to look upon, as we deal with the groups in reviews and year-end ratings. More changes are being implemented in this site to reflect it. Hope these things serve as strong reminder for K-Pop to take its issues very seriously.

In this regard, the author decided to trim a bit of seconds to save time producing it. Well, we still have the fun like that of our previous releases.

Just in case you’re curious why other tracks are not included, look at our channel for more misheard lyrics this year. In the next periods we will focus more on group-specific releases like that of GFRIEND and BLACKPINK.

TWICE’s Sana goes out, engages on dates

SEOUL, South Korea – Is Sana gay?

This question, while served as inside joke for Onces, has been answered with a resounding no. And TWICE’s Sana proves that she’s right, as she is reportedly gone dating with EXO’s Suho.

The said date raised curiosity of the netizens, who are not used to members doing so. It can be remembered that JYP Entertainment silently lifted the dating ban on all TWICE members after several years. This was done amidst controversies with its leader Jihyo, up to the point that the latter received hate for being with Kang Daniel. And this time, Momo followed suit with Super Junior’s Heechul.

To date, various proofs are laid denoting their interest in each other, which was supposedly started February last year. According to Dispatch:

As of writing, Dispatch haven’t procured clear shots of the two. One of its photographers explained that “다현은 이제사나가 그 남자를 만날 때마다 포함됩니다. 그녀는 선배님에게 무슨 일이 있었는지 배웠을 것입니다.” (Dahyun is now included everytime Sana meets the guy. She must’ve learned from what happened to their sunbaenim.)

Reactions

Netizens were amused and shocked over the situation. While some cheered on it, others were not happy about it:

ㅋㅋ, 바보 (Haha, stupid)

키나바한 융 이바 잔 ㅋㅋㅋ (Others got scared of this news haha)

에디와오. 카라카시나카카투와에. 차링 (Just wow. It’s not really funny.)

탕이나나만 (Fxxk)

사나올ㅋㅋㅋ (Hope all experience the same hahaha)

Reviewing the MV Reviewers 2019

(Hopefully, I could’ve provided a better tongue-twister with this title.)

In reviewing K-Pop releases, the author highly regards comments from other reviewers. Their remarks are included and considered as the performances are being rated.

I suppose this is the first time that we will review the reviewers. We will just assess the way they look on reviews. So, no grade will be given to them. This will help our reviewers look on their approach, and make necessary adjustments if any.

For now, we will focus on MV reviewers for this year, namely Obsessed and Assessed, AllKPop, TheBiasList, and KPopReviewed. Might as well include yours truly in this kind of review. Let’s start!

TheBiasList

While his biases are shown throughout the site, he definitely has bases in doing so. His reviews are full of descriptive words which I liked very much.

As explained, he focused his critic on song structure, energy, and momentum. He goes beyond critiquing MVs to include other topics like Produce 101 and Queendom. Got amazed on the way how he reviewed these to the highest degree possible.

TheBiasList has no time for cute concepts, and instead seeks mature concepts like that of TWICE’s Feel Special. As for the music, he regularly complains of trapped EDM styles frequently used by K-Pop tracks this year.

For improvement, better for him to be less serious with his reviews. Anyway, at the end of the day, K-Pop is there just to entertain us.

KPopReviewed

Somehow I can relate with the blogger, with both of us having very busy schedules.

His reviews are very descriptive, compressed, lengthy, and a bit lenient. Preferences tend to accomodate virtually any concept. The best part is on interpreting the MV and telling a storyline for it, for which he is expert in this skill. This is notable in his review of Wheein’s Goodbye and Winner’s Soso. That is a plus, since most MVs released tend to be abstract.

For a bit of improvement, he might consider adding other K-Pop topics like reviews of Queendom or assessment of K-Pop as a whole.

AllKPop

The site’s reviews include the whole album, not just the lead track. While these kinds are a bit comprehensive (with respect to albums), their reviews are lacking in substance.

What are possible reasons? First, lack of reviews on regular basis. This might be attributable to them being over-reliant on user content or novice staff writers to make these write-ups. Worse, they haven’t assigned any permanent staff to do regular reviews.

The reviewers must take a deeper approach to make up a very good write-up of K-Pop acts, regardless of preferences. They should also take more focus on the MV in the future.

Obsessed and Assessed

If there’s a reviewer who got to be more brutal and frank, O&A is the answer. Just like TheBiasList, he/she mostly dislikes cute concepts.

Seungri proved to be a turning point for him/her to be inactive for a month, only to resume to catch up with April releases (BTS, TWICE, IZ*One, Blackpink). Afterwards he/she provided no write-ups till it closed the site.

As of present, the website is down as O&A lost interest on this. It just only considered resuming next year, which I highly doubt given added negatives in the genre today.

What if O&A continued reviewing? It would reprimand groups and agencies who do not perform well. And maybe I would just focus on important releases.

For improvement, one little problem is on not providing enough details on About page, if any. At a minimum, he/she should’ve defined who he/she is, and what would readers might expect of him/her.

Finally, O&A should’ve learned to cheer up and see the other side of life.

TweetNewscaster

And now, for my self-assessment. Just like other reviewers, the author had been brutal and frank on reviewing tracks, albeit to some degree.

TweetNewscaster was simplifying its reviews since we started with GFRIEND’s Sunrise. From a 4-page review, I trimmed it to two-page (and even one-page) review. On grading, there’s a set of criterion. At least, there’s basis for any biases.

I take on a different approach. No problem for me on any genre of music or vocals. Best MVs are more on not featuring horror, sexual themes, and gross things. Dances and its degree of difficulty are also noted. In some cases, special incentives are given to some groups, as reward for supporting advocacies or having outstanding attendance.

Jokes are added in some reviews to entertain, to make readers laugh, and to tone down seriousness in reviews. Only here you can find this stuff. Anyway, spreading fun is the main goal of the site.

For improvement, I have to break the monotony on reviewing them, and make reviews more concise. Might as well think of other ways to catch up, considering greater workload in the future.

And for the info of everyone, I’ll have to take things easy, since few do read stuffs here. I’ll have to limit also number of groups to be reviewed starting next year.

Rating K-Pop Groups 2019: Other Groups (CLC, AOA, MAMAMOO, Momoland, SATURDAY)

(Side Note: In rating select groups, primary objective is to assess the groups’ responses and attitude of its members. These are crucial also for their survival, profitability, and reputation.

Groups who are not mentioned here and in related articles are presumed to garner 85.00% rating, or “Satisfactory”, unless otherwise stated.)

CLC

They are giving their best when it comes to lyric making. In fact, Yeeun took part in writing songs for their group, notably No, Me, and Devil. With regards to other projects, Yeeun tried her stint as MC in The Show, and that’s okay.

Seungyeon’s response over an issue with her is quite amazing. After news that she was beaten broke out, she immediately clarified what actually happened.

As for Sorn, since the racism issue broke out on her livecast, she instantly apologized to fans and viewers who’ve might hurt on the video. Immediate responses are important so as to clarify issues that might be misinterpreted.

AOA

Very pleased with Seolhyun’s attitude of handling commitments. Despite being in drama, still she manages to perform with the group in Queendom and in their recent New Moon comeback. This shows how special AOA is for her.

Jimin’s love and commitment with the group is equally notable. In fact, this attitude spilled towards Celeb Five’s members, helping them till 4:00 in morning for the latter’s debut.

Meanwhile, I am not happy with Mina leaving the group to focus on her own career. Think of a member who left the group during times of crisis. She should’ve looked at Seolhyun, who remained even if she ventured in acting.

While the future of the group remains unsure, the remaining five are working to solve this dilemma by joining Queendom. To add, they still retain the trust and mutual respect. Hope this will be a good start.

Because of their outstanding attitude, they will also be given five extra points for every comeback they made, regardless of their absences or hiatus.

Momoland

During the time I was a Merry, I could not help but ask why the group’s downturn was so sudden.

Problems

Sorry for this. Their major problem is on attendance, especially that they are given rare chances to do so overseas. This is noticeable on the group every time they appear on TV shows. Secondary is on health issues. Third is on lack of regard for fellow members, which should’ve bind them for so long.

Meanwhile, Dabin consistently made excuses not attending concerts and fanmeets. I find Dabin’s excuses still not too convincing, since other stars can handle both commitments without any problems, like Eunwoo, Seolhyun, and IU. (Take the case where she is always missing in PH TV shows due to these things.)

Why venture into drama if she still has health issues? And if she can work, why prioritize it instead of helping her fellow members? This is a kind of attitude you won’t see in other groups.

Changes

We have discussed several times these points so that they improve their attitude. But with Momoland (and the agency) still not listening, we have to seek stricter measures in reviews and dealings. This we will do in the coming years, just to be fair to other groups.

The author made some changes on treatment with the group, from being the most favorite to the least. But with Taeha and Dabin leaving the group, no choice but to unfollow them. And strike the group out of my bias list forever. Again, it does not make sense following them anymore with these kinds of attitude.

SATURDAY

While their agency’s future is promising, reverse happens to the group.

The future of the group is very bleak, even if the agency is very responsive to the group’s challenges. We can be sure of this due to frequent turnovers this year. In fact, we are down with three original members (Ayeon, Yuki, and Haneul) from seven last year.

The members, particularly those who left, lacked sense of direction, which would’ve kept them intact for long. Sunha left due to desire for career change, and yet, she hasn’t started any. It’s also not helping that Chohee and Sion are silent on reason why they left agency. This would help clarify issues, and give their biased-fans time to cope with it.

While the group as a whole will last, the major issue would be on the members themselves, being prone to turnovers. If the members will not hold on and continue their dream, the group might disband without the agency’s fault.

Rating K-Pop Groups 2019: Big 3 and YG Groups (TWICE, ITZY, BLACKPINK, BTS, TXT, GFRIEND)

TWICE

The most impressive attitude of TWICE is on giving their best to Onces. They’ve shown this in their recent Manila concert. Despite having health issues, especially Mina and Jihyo, they managed to make PH Onces happy by having complete attendance. PH being sorely deprived of visits, they make it up by giving their best shot.

Another best attitude is on thinking of fellow member. They dedicate their awards to Minari, and allotted space for her. Not to mention Jihyo finding a way to include her despite absence, and comforting her (together with Nayeon). In fact, they realized how even one member can make difference to the group.

As to Jihyo, she expressed her desire to recover quickly from neck strains. This is the kind of attitude the author appreciates much. But she must take a rest for now, and take time. Also for Minari, who always take time to attend on activities even if ailing, she really needs to rest.

A point for improvement is for Dahyun to be a camera spotter, which they missed. Talk about caring for others’ privacy. If one remembers, Dispatch sneaked into Jihyo and Kang Daniel’s privacy, since Tofu was not included in their roundabouts. Take Dahyun in the picture, and surely Dispatch won’t “invade” into the couple.

BLACKPINK

Even with minimal engagements, BLACKPINK still hits the charts and sales. Part of success lies on their attitude.

The most conspicuous attitude was of Jennie, especially in their recent PH visit. Despite enduring pains, she maintained her composure and greeted PH and Macanese Blinks who are waiting for her last June. If this is lingering, she has to take a rest.

Another attitude worth commending was of Rosé. It can be remembered that she was not given solo debuts for this year. Upon learning of this issue, Rosé immediately responded by telling fans of that event. She assuaged fans, and told them not to worry about her. To add, she tried to communicate with some fans using sign language.

Jisoo showed her concern with Jendeukie, as she hugged and comforted her all the way at the airport.

Finally was that of Lisa, being humble, polite, and approachable in facing the press and other people. Most notable is on donating money to help flood victims in Thailand.

So far, no other negative issues re attitude were encountered with BLACKPINK.

BTS

The attitude played by BTS for this year is very outstanding. So, it’s not a surprise if they still are in the top.

First of all is on being genuine, sincere, humble and “good-natured”. This humility is expressed in their song Boy With Luv and Make It Right, where they go down to be with ARMYs. This they also do when dealing with some people. These acts will take them to greater heights.

Second aspect is on being responsible for actions. This is noted with Jungkook who was involved in car accident. Upon happening, he apologized and took responsibility for the incident.

Most of all, they are in complete attendance. Name any overseas event this year, and we’ll see that they haven’t missed attendance to these. Even in the US, where K-Pop is quite new, they managed to be complete on various shows. Not to mention being complete in virtually all concerts and engagements.

Charity works have to be also noted. Suga donated 100 million won to Korea Pediatric Cancer Foundation. RM later gave already the same amount to a deaf school. The group also donated a huge sum to continue the Love Yourself campaign.

Another positive note is on influencing ARMYs to be socially responsible, like awareness campaign on Amazon and other environmental projects. For instance, Vietnamese ARMYs opened a school and named it after V (Taehyung), in addition to forest project named after RM. ARMYs even went far to help fellow fans who can’t afford the Saudi concert.

A point for improvement would be on toning down intense moves. Otherwise, this might pose danger to their health. This time, they have to take things easy and consider safety first.

Health issues are still underway, such that the group’s supposed recent fanmeet was cancelled. But this has no negative effect at all. In fact, despite this, they managed to name their own fandom and greet their fans in live chat.

To add, Taehyun cared for MOAs by having a coffee truck, loaded with foodstuffs. This shows how special fans are for him and the group.

GFRIEND

GFRIEND’s attitude, and attendance during Manila tour, convinced me to include them as one of three most favorite groups.

They performed in their Manila tour as a complete group. They even appeared complete in a PH music show. As such, extra five points will be given in favor of them in their next comebacks.

So far, there were no major issues on their attitude. If there’s any, they respond very well.

We’ll explain some positive attitudes here. For instance, Sowon just shrugged off the dating issue with Cha Eunwoo as if nothing happened. Another example is Yerin, who sent a coffee truck for Apink’s Hayoung and Red Velvet’s Joy as support for their own activities.

As for SinB, she immediately responded to allegations that she is a difficult person, while it clearly tells otherwise. This was amidst her words taken out of context during Produce X 101. Finally, the group itself in a snap clarified their being focused on phones during live radio broadcast. These responses, like what we will discuss later with CLC, are very important to avoid misunderstandings and issues.
