In this part where we go beyond K-Pop, we’ll try to give advice to a fan. Hope these tips will be helpful for all of us, regardless of our preferences. Let’s start!
From an international Hallyu group page:
I have a problem. I’m trying to stan ASTRO and I can’t choose a bias. Help.
Take your time first. In your case, stan ASTRO. Take time first to know the six before choosing a bias.
Why? First of all, no one’s really going to stop you from picking this or that person. And this is not a big deal, since it’s all up to you. If you’re comfortable in choosing a bias, go for it. But if you’re comfortable by stanning them as a group, it’s okay.
You may try to stan them all, then pick a bias later. This tip is mostly helpful in your case.
Or pick a bias first before stanning them all. This is helpful especially if you are getting to like the attributes of each member in the group.
How do I pick?
It was hard for you to pick a bias in Astro. How much more if you’re a multi-fandom type? Let me share some experiences of picking my biases.
As part of 19 fandoms, picking biases is not a joke but is enjoyable. And as I am reviewing most of the acts this year, I am planning to add at least 9 groups to my bias list.
First consideration is on the visuals. Second, but equally important, is the attitude. Third is on their talents. Other factors would be on dealing with fans, making a humorous issue, cracking jokes, doing aegyo, and other things.
To wit, here are select biases: Jendeukie/Umji (visuals); all TWICE members (attitude); RM, Moonbyul (talent); Seungkwan (humor); Eunha (aegyo)
In some cases, I deem it right to pick all members as my biases, because I like them all, or as a sign of gratitude. This is the case with GFRIEND, SEVENTEEN, SATURDAY, Red Velvet, and TWICE. For Momoland, I decided to pick only seven members. Not Nayun or Dabin, as they still have issues to solve.
Well, even if you have picked your bias, another member will try to catch your attention away from that bias. There goes the concept of “ultimate bias” and “bias wrecker”. Just Google it.
At some point, you might now know who is your most favorite member. That’s your ultimate bias. Now, define who is/are the other members catching your attention, too. You can call him/them as bias wrecker/s.
Let’s put it this way: You tell me later that your bias is Sanha. But later on, Eunwoo and MJ caught your attention. The two are casting doubts on you retaining Sanha as your lead pick. In this case, Sanha is your ultimate bias, and the two as bias wreckers. All in all, you have three out of six members as your faves.
Depending on your preference, you may place more than one person in these positions.
You may see My Bias List here. There I explain the reasons why I chose this or that as my biases, ultimate bias, or wreckers in each group I follow. That’s also updated. Hope that might be helpful as your guide.
